A lion statue that was reworked to match its twin which was smashed by a automobile, has been declared as so ugly by locals {that a} bag has been positioned over its head.

The pair of two-tonne stone cats have stood on the entrance to Weelsby Woods in Grimsby since 1951.

Stonemasons repaired one of many statues that was knocked off its plinth by a automobile in 2023.

The lions have been first carved in 1876 for a house on Abbey Street and have been relocated to the park after the land was donated to the city within the Fifties.

Locals raised greater than £10,000 to restore the broken lion, which was knocked from its pedestal in April 2023.

North East Lincolnshire Council funded the newest facelift of the intact lion, which was carried out by the identical Lincoln stonemason who did the earlier restore, BBC Look North reported.

Council bosses have insisted that the ‘ending touches’ have but to be added to the stone pair.

However not everybody agreed that the remodelled twin was a downgrade.

Councillor Harry Hudson insisted that the reworked statue seemed ‘even higher’ and stated he was ‘elated’ the pair have been each again on their pedestals and matching.

He added: ‘We’re thrilled to have been ready to do that.’
