Sharaz Ali is claimed to have been ‘motivated by jealousy and fuelled by drink and medicines’ when he set fireplace to the house of Bryonie Gawith and her three young children within the early hours of August 21 final 12 months.

He stated Antonia had instructed police that Ali ‘cherished the children … as a part of her incomprehension at how he may have carried out this to them’.

He instructed jurors: ‘We all know from the texts that it didn’t cease him threatening her sister and the kids.’

Mr Brooke stated the connection between Ali and Antonia had been abusive and that it was Bryonie, who ‘had gone by her personal struggles’ and was separated from her associate, who persuaded her sister to depart.

Bryonie, 29, and her youngsters Denisty Birtle, 9, Oscar Birtle, 5, and 22-month-old Aubree Birtle, died within the blaze.

Ali, of no mounted handle, and Calum Sunderland, 26, of Keighley, are charged with murdering Bryonie and the three youngsters, and making an attempt to homicide Antonia.

Mohammed Shabir, 45, who had been because of go on trial with them, died of a coronary heart assault final month after collapsing in jail.

Prosecutors say Shabir drove to and from the home whereas Sunderland kicked the door in.
