An enormous fireball was seen erupting over a Malaysian airport after a Boeing jet smashed into the bottom simply seconds after take-off.

Footage from the southeast Asian nation's Sultan Ahmad Shah Airport seems to indicate sparks flying from the jet because it left the runway.

The RMAF then mentioned in an announcement: "We want to inform you of an accident involving an F/A-18D Hornet at 9.05pm, August 21 on the Sultan Ahmad Shah Airport in Kuantan.

One witness advised native information company Bernama: "After the explosion, I may see flames within the airport and smoke billowing.

"Initially there was a fireplace burning, however then there was an explosion and the blaze obtained intense."

Different onlookers mentioned the dramatic crash seemed like a missile strike – and was heard for miles round.
