Over 50,000 folks have signed a petition opposing the mortgage of the French Bayeux Tapestry to the British Museum in London.

Artwork historian Didier Rykner, who began the petition, warned that the tapestry is "already very fragile, with tears and holes within the cloth."

The petition was launched on Change.org after French President Emmanuel Macron provided the tapestry as a part of an artwork change.

The British Museum mentioned its conservation and collections administration workforce is skilled at dealing with and caring for this sort of materials and is working with colleagues in France on the tapestry's show.

The 70-metre-long Bayeux Tapestry probably made by English embroiderers, tells the story of the Norman invasion in 1066 and the way King Harold of England was killed by an arrow to the attention.

After William the Conqueror turned king, the tapestry was delivered to France.

It stayed in Bayeux Cathedral for 700 years and has been displayed within the Bayeux Museum since 1983.
